While the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is preparing for its 51st year, it has already aired some of the names of the distinguished foreign guests that will be seen in the city's festival streets.

The main star is two-time Oscar nominee, famous film and theatre actor Willem Dafoe who will come to Karlovy Vary to accept the highest award, i.e. the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema. As a tribute to Willem Dafoe, the KVIFF will screen Abel Ferrara's Pasolini (2 July, 10:30 pm, Hotel Thermal Grand Hall) and Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (3 July, 11:00 pm, Summer Open-Air Cinema). Another major festival guest will be American screenwriter, director and producer Charlie Kaufman who won an Oscar for his screenplay to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In Karlovy Vary, Charlie Kaufman will receive the Festival President's Award from Jiří Bartoška.

As a part of the Horizons non-competition section, the KVIFF will screen Julieta, a new film of director Pedro Almodóvar. The two actresses playing the main character of Julieta – Adriana Ugarte and Emma Suárez – will be personally accompany the screening.

The one-of-a-kind film festival will be held from 1 to 9 July 2016 and apart from film stars, it will offer an array of films by various directors from all over the world along with an abundant accompanying programme including concerts and parties around the city.

The main centre of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival will be Hotel Thermal, and accompanying events will take place all around Karlovy Vary.

The festival will open with the world premiere of Anthropoid with the participation of a grand artistic delegation. The film about the assassination of Reichsprotektor Heydrich will be presented by actors Jamie Dornan and Toby Jones, Aňa Geislerová, Alena Mihulová, Václav Neužil, and Marcin Dorocinski along with screenwriter and director Sean Ellis.

Films from around the world are competing at the Karlovy Vary IFF in several categories; films are judged by a jury of experts, as well as by the audience itself. Thus, the Karlovy Vary IFF is unique in its category for being one of the few festivals open to the non-professional public. The best film is awarded the Crystal Globe at the final closing ceremony. Awards are also given for Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor, and many more. Each year, many famous celebrities walk down the red carpet.

A guide to all chosen films of this year’s festival, as well as the cinema programme, can be found at www.kviff.com.
