The Valentine’s Day is surrounded with many legends. One of them speaks of a priest by the name of Valentine who in spite of a prohibition by the Emperor Claudius II performed weddings of young soldiers in secret. The Emperor forbade his soldiers to marry because women were said to ruin the morals of warriors. Valentine was arrested and imprisoned during one of these secret weddings. While in prison he and the daughter of the prison guard became friends and he sent her a letter just before his execution saying: “From your Valentine”. It was the first “Valentine card” in history. Priest Valentine was executed on the 14 of February. The only fact preserved in history is that he died on 14 February 269 AD and his veneration was ordered by Pope Gelasius I in 496. The celebration of priest Valentine’s martyrdom later merged with the Luprecalia festival celebration, giving an origin to the festival day of all people in love.
