Variace in Karlovy Vary: Two Days of Music and Film

This autumn, Karlovy Vary once again becomes a meeting point for two artistic worlds – film and classical music. The Variace event, organized by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Czech Philharmonic, will take place on November 22–23, offering a unique program at various venues around the city.

Friday, November 22

• ČRo Vltava: Akcent LIVE
  4:30 PM | Former Savings Bank Building (Divadelní náměstí)
  Host Saša Michailidis and guests discuss how classical music influences cinema. Free entry.

• Mysliveček, Mozart in the Sparkasse
  5:00 PM | Former Savings Bank Building
  A wind octet from the Czech Philharmonic and Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra performs under the direction of Ondřej Vrabec. Free entry.

Saturday, November 23

• Bird
  11:00 AM | Imperial Spa
  Andrea Arnold’s film about growing up too soon, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

• Albinoni, Dvořák at the Hot Spring Colonnade
  2:30 PM | Hot Spring Colonnade
  A chamber orchestra performs Albinoni’s Trumpet Concerto and Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings. Free entry.

• Strange Way of Life
  3:00 PM | Imperial Spa
  Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language film, awarded the Golden Lion in Venice.

• A Real Pain
  7:00 PM | Imperial Spa
  Jesse Eisenberg’s comedic road movie, a hit at the Sundance Festival.

• Czech Philharmonic: Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák
  8:00 PM | Hotel Thermal, Grand Hall
  Under Semjon Bychkov’s baton, the orchestra performs Smetana’s Má vlast and Dvořák’s Piano Concerto in G minor.
