The International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary is the most prominent international film festival of Category A in Central and Eastern Europe and the single Category A festival in the Czech Republic. The Category A places the Karlovy Vary IFF in the prestigious festivals group with the status of “non-specialized festival with competition of feature films”, along with the IFFs in Cannes, Berlin, Venice or Tokyo.

The KVIFF presents over 180 new films from all over the world in the Czech Republic for the first time every year. A number of films make it to the Czech or international distribution, to the TV screens or the programmes of other festivals due to their release at the Karlovy Vary IFF. Some films will be viewed by the public exclusively at the Karlovy Vary festival.

Karlovy Vary will plunge into the festival atmosphere in the beginning of the summer holidays, i.e. from 28 June to 6 July 2013. The main centre of activities of the IFF will be located in front of Hotel Thermal but film showings and many additional activities will be taking place all across town.

Films from the whole world compete at the Karlovy Vary IFF in several categories and they are evaluated by both a specialist and audience jury. The Karlovy Vary IFF is one of the few festivals in its category open to the non-specialist public. The best film is awarded the Crystal Globe at the festive closing of the festival. Prizes are also given for the best direction, female and male acting and many other features.

History of the Karlovy Vary IFF
The KVIFF is one of the oldest film festivals ever (its 1st year took place in 1946.) The festival was organized under the pressure of the political situation in the Socialist Czechoslovakia for over 40 years. After the social changes in November 1989 the festival struggled with lack of interest both from the state and the public for several years since it seemed discredited for good in their eyes.
In 1994 a new team of organizers headed by famous Czech actor Jiří Bartoška and prominent film publicist Eva Zaoralová took charge of the festival, and they decided to turn the stagnating film festival into a film forum of international prominence. With their new programme and organization concept, the team of Jiří Bartoška and Eva Zaoralová managed to return prestige and interest of both professional and non-professional public to the festival in just a few years.
