The 53rd International Film Festival has just started in Karlovy Vary

53. The International Film Festival has just begun and has already introduced some of the resounding names of foreign guests to be seen on the festival streets of Karlovy Vary.

This year’s 53rd KVIFF will present a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema to actor, director, screenwriter, producer and musician Tim Robbins, who won an Oscar for best supporting actor for his performance in Mystic River (2003) and who was nominated for a best director Oscar for Dead Man Walking (1995).  At the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Tim Robbins will present his two auteur films Bob Robertsand Cradle Will Rock. In addition, he will appear on stage for a special concert performance by Tim Robbins and The Rogues Gallery Band.

The Karlovy Vary Festival continues the tradition of appreciating the major personalities of world cinema, such as directors such as William Friedkin, Jerry Schatzberg or Ken Loach or screenwriter Paul Laverty. The Crystal Globe Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinematography will take place at this year's Karlovy Vary festival, screenwriter, producer and director Barry Levinson. Oscar-winning director and five other Oscar nominees Barry Levinson combines personal stories with his often satirical vision of society in his author's and directorial work, and his films have been a major influence on a number of young filmmakers.

The guest of the KVF IFF will be British actor Robert Pattinson. During the evening, he will take over the Karlovy Vary IFF President's Award, through which the festival will appreciate his striking actor's collaboration on the mainstream films of the contemporary directorial influences of the author's film.

The one-of-a-kind film festival will be held from 29 June to 7 July 2018 and apart from film stars, it will offer an array of films by various directors from all over the world along with an abundant accompanying programme including concerts and parties around the city.

The main centre of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival will be Hotel Thermal, and accompanying events will take place all around Karlovy Vary.

Films from around the world are competing at the Karlovy Vary IFF in several categories; films are judged by a jury of experts, as well as by the audience itself. Thus, the Karlovy Vary IFF is unique in its category for being one of the few festivals open to the non-professional public. The best film is awarded the Crystal Globe at the final closing ceremony. Awards are also given for Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor, and many more. Each year, many famous celebrities walk down the red carpet.
