The porcelain and glass of Karlovy Vary have been exported to the whole world for hundreds of years, and they can rightly boast the title of the “typical product of the Region of Karlovy Vary” along with the Becherovka liquor. The porcelain production tradition in the Region of Karlovy Vary started to be written in 1794.

Based on this tradition of porcelain production in the region the company Thun 1794 a.s. came up with the idea of organizing a display of this traditional craft in Karlovy Vary in 1995. The Porcelain Festival has been essentially tied with the Thun 1794 a.s. company for 19 years.

An interest in a quality Czech porcelain keeps growing so the Porcelain Festival grows as well.

In the early years the Porcelain Festival used to take place once a year. In the recent years two periods have become the custom, a spring and an autumn one.

The spring porcelain markets have always been a part of the largest event in Karlovy Vary – the Spa Season Opening. The autumn markets in September are always accompanied by shows of the dance groups from the whole world as part of the Karlovy Vary Folklore Festival. The Porcelain Festival is a display of the traditional Czech porcelain and it takes place in one of the most beautiful parts of the spa area – in front of Grandhotel Pupp.

You can enjoy this year’s autumn Porcelain Festival in front of Grandhotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary from Friday, 5 September, to Sunday, 7 September 2014

Sales times:

    5 September (Friday): 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    6 September (Saturday): 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    7 September (Sunday): 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Currently, the Porcelain Festivals both in spring and autumn include sale of porcelain for discounted prices not only from the Thun 1794 a.s. company but also the Moser glass manufacture, Rudolf Kämpf Loučky porcelain manufacture, or porcelain producers Český porcelán Dubí or atelier JM Lesov. At the same time, a display of set tables will take place in the Gala Hall of Grandhotel Pupp. A time spent over delicious coffee or refreshments in Grandhotel Pupp is pleasantly accompanied by live music throughout the whole day and additional programme for children.

The Porcelain Festival is primarily a display of the products made by the individual plants, as well as a wide presentation of how demanding yet beautiful this craft is. Currently, the desire to learn a good trade is often pushed to a back burner in many young people. Due to the current trends and development, there are quality craftsmen lacking who would take over the tradition and make an effort to preserve it for the next generations.

The Porcelain Festival is amply visited by thousands of tourists from the Czech Republic and abroad as well as the town citizens every year.
